Is it possible that Atticus is too lenient with his children. What kind of parent allows his young children to address him by his first name?

Yes, I think Atticus models good parenting skills, he is involved in his chidlrens lives, he plays with his son Jem, he is more a father than a friend, and he disciplines his children.

yes, Atticus does model good parenting skills because he teaches the kids moral lessons. He preaches that the best way of learning something is actually experiencing it. Atticus also teaches them wright from wrong and dont always believe what the mojority think

Atticus does indeed convey good parenting skills. Although he may not do everything with his kids that relates to sports and outdoor activities he instills the good values and principles that will make his kids grow up to be good individuals as grown ups. He tells them that intelligence and book smarts along with good values are what's right. He may not make Scout a "proper young lady" but he's taught her how to control her temper and do what's right no matter what she hears about her father and his doings.

yes, Atticus models good parenting skills. he does his best to support them and prepare Jem and Scout for life. He teaches them to not let peoples rude comments get the best of them. He teaches them from right and wrong. He warnes them how everyone doesn't see everything threw the same way.

I believe that Atticus Finch is a good role model for parenting. He cares about his children very much and he tries to explain the sometimes awkward questions both Scout and Jem ask. He teaches them lessons, like telling them that he has to defend Robinson in the case. He may not be very hands on, but he tries his best to raise them in a town that does not approve of Scout and Jem calling him Atticus and a town that is predujuice against many people. Atticus is a good father and his kids are becoming proud of him, even when some people in town decide to judge.

I believe that Atticus does modle good parenting. He listens to both sides of the kids story, so it makes it fair. I think he should disaplin them more when they do wrong things, possible grounding them or spanking them.

Yes. I do think that Atticus does show good parenting skills to his children. He expects them to be good kids and respect him but at the same time shows the same respect to them. He seems to be laid back but his kids still have punishments for their negative actions. ALso, his kids can talk to him, which, to me, is important in a parent-child relationship.

Atticus Finch's parenting style is very down home country like. He lets his kids be curious and find out what is in the world for themselves instead of putting it in front of them. He recognizes that they all go through stages and they need to be able to find for themselves what is good and bad, but he does keep some reign on them. He probably does not keep as much as he should but when necessary he does not let them go completely wild. He puts in their minds the right skills and values that they need to have and therefore DOES have mostly good parenting skills. Is there anything wrong with letting your kids learn for themselves what they should and should not be doing in the world?

Arggggg, i think that Atticus is a very good role modle. He does the best he can to ensure the well being of his children to the best of his ablity. Ensuring them to not listen to others rude comments and makes sure they have a sense of right and wrong.

Atticus Finch makes his children mind, but he trusts them, so he gives them freedom. He's gone a lot for work, but he loves his children and he wants what is best for them. In some ways Atticus models good parenting skills, but in other ways he doesn't. For example, he lets his kids walk to town alone during the summer. That isn't too safe. He makes them go to school and he takes time away from his work and other daily activities to read with his children, which is good.

howdie buckaroo. While he is leniant in the aspect that he lets them play outside, he doesn't let them run "completely" wild. Most of the things that the kids did were sneaking around.

Do you think Jem understands what is happening to their father more than Scout does or is he just pretending to understand?

Do you think Mrs. Dubose is mean to Jem and Scout because she is just old and grumpy and hardly nobody visits her or because she doesn't agree with Atticus' decision to defend a negro in the court and because everyone said the Finch kids weren't well behaved so they made it snow the previous winter?

Also, the kind of parent that lets their kids call them by their first name is one who wants to be on an equal plain with their kids. I think it lets them "be" equal.

Yes i think atticus is a good parent because they have certain rules to follow such as not being able to go out of calpurnia's calling range. he also talks to his kids like when scout was upset that she couldnt read with him anymore.

No, I don think Atticus is to lenient with his children. He is more mature then most fathers and only is strict on the important things

Atticus does have good parenting skills even though he doesn't do much with them. It's just because of his age. He still gives some time to reading with Scout. Even without their mother, Atticus can still teach them right from wrong.

I believe that Atticus is a good parent. He teaches his kids necessary life lessons in unusual ways. For example, through Mrs. Dubose, Atticus taught Jem and Scout that true courage isn't "a man with a gun in his hand." This taught Scout that courage doesn't have to be in the form of fighting. Atticus has yet to do anything that has made me question his parenting skills.

@Mrs. G: A parent that allows his children to address him by his first name is the type of parent who addressed his parents by their first names.

I beilieve that Atticus is a great dad to Scout and Jem. He is involved in his chidlrens lives and he disciplines his children.

I belive the person that let's their children call them by thier first name is someone who called their parents by their first name.

Unknown said...

Yes, I think Atticus does model good parenting skills. He allows Scout to be who she wants to be and he also alows both kids to show their opinion.

The kind of parent who lets their kids call them by their frist name is the kind of person who had called their parents by thier first name.

In what ways do you think Maycomb and Greenfield are alike and/or different?

Laura said...

Atticus is not too lenient with his children. He reprimands them for the right things, just maybe not everything. He takes a different parenting approach than others. For example, when Scout decides she doesn't want to go to school anymore, he negotiates with her and makes a deal to continue reading to her as long as she makes attendance at school.
The children only call him by Atticus only because of a habit, not out of disrespect. Just because he is going about parenting in a different way doesn't say he's a bad one.

Atticus's kids sometime seem like they can do anything they want. So why doesn't it say much about the things that Atticus does to them if they misbehave or do something good?

james_mann24 said...

Atticus is a cool dude, i think he isnt to lenient with his kids because just because they call him by his first name doesnt mean he lets them get away with everything. They show him the same respect that his children show everyone else.

Why do you think Boo Radley got the name Boo?

Unknown said...

Do you think Scout and her Aunt will ever get along?

Laura said...

In response to the question about similarities and differences, of Maycomb and Greenfield, I don't see many differences. The families of both towns have been established for a long time, thus saying everyone knows everyone. The small talk and gossip gets around the town quickly and each time the stories get more extreme. In Maycomb the "true" story of Boo Radley depends on who is telling the story. Many stories around Greenfield are the same way.

Why is Calpurnia so protective over Scout?

Corey Davenport said...

Yes i think atticus is a good parent because they have certain rules to follow such as not being able to go out of calpurnia's calling range. he also talks to his kids like when scout was upset that she couldnt read with him anymore.

After watching his children wonder about Boo Radley, why doesn't Atticus explain to them what he knows about the situation? Instead he chooses to let them continue to wonder about the man, only to reprimand them later when they do something to try to satisfy their curiosity, such as attempting to send Boo a note.

And perhaps the reason that the children call Atticus by his first name is that they have no memories of another person, such as their mother, ever addressing him otherwise.

Staten said...

I think that Aticus let his children be curious and not tell them what he knew about the Radleys because he knows that learning from experience is one of the best ways to grow up. He still keeps a good reign on them and doesn't let them go to far, but he lets them learn for themselves. Either that, or he may think it is best not to let them know everything he does about the situation because it may spark their curiosity even more.

Atticus treats his children well. He knows that they need to understand the world they live in, so he is honest. He doesn't lie to his children.

Mrs. G said...

Re Greenfield/Maycomb similarity: Aunt Alex's "streak" philosophy for explaining behavior reminds me of Greenfield. I suppose the same is true for most any small town, but Auntie's comments make me laugh because I feel I have heard the same notions--just paired with different names.

Do you think Atticus misses his old life?

justin said...

Calpurnia is so protective of Scout because Calpurnia is Scouts motherly figure. she knows the proper way Scout should act, but also knows that it will be hard for Scout to change her ways.

Anonymous said...

I think Atticus does model good parenting because he is kind to his kids and listens to what they have to say

yes, I think Scout and her Aunt will get along someday, Scout just needs to realize that her aunt is only lookiing out for her, and just wants what is best.
